Settling In
(10/7/04)
Preston's now back and working.
Rigel, Diane, and Cathy have settled into a nice
routine, though Diane's not getting much quality sleep
these days.
Uncle Bill's Birthday
(9/29/04)
Today we celebrated Uncle
Bill's birthday by giving Rigel his first bath because
the umbilical cord stump and plastibell have fallen off.
This past week has been a lot of fun as Rigel starts
having longer quiet alert phases where he's taking
everything in and seemingly focusing on you.
He's been read books, tried
his hand at piano playing, and some good old fashioned
snuggling (falling asleep on mom or dad's chest are two
favorite locations).
Finally off the Biliruben
light
(9/23/04)
Rigel's biliruben levels
finally dropped below 18 in time for Tuesday's (9/21)
blood test, so he came off the light and has been much
more mobile. Tummy time and a sponge bath are two
things he's been able to get into.
|
I just look pouty; combined tummy
time, bath time, and naked butt time isn't really that bad.
(9/22/04) |
|
My bathroom is nice and toasty.
(9/22/04) |
Still with a touch of
Jaundice
(9/20/04)
Rigel's biliruben levels are still above the magic
number of 18, so he's going to be on the bili-blanket
for at least 96 hours. So Preston
hasn't been able to do much quality snuggling since
Friday and is really looking forward to getting his new
toy a bit more mobile.
Phototherapy on a 80+ degree day.
(Note, it was snowing 24 hour later)

Here you can see the jaundice, but
he still looks content on the bili-blanket.

The biliruben setup
(9/18/04) |
|
Biliruben (9/18/04)
Yep, he's got a touch of
jaundice. Not a big problem, but his biliruben
levels are high enough that he's been on phototherapy
for 24 hours now. If his levels are down enough at
tomorrow's test then we'll be able to take him off the
phototherapy and spend more time tormenting him face to
face!

His first morning in his crib.
Note Grandma Cathy's nifty fireman sheets!
(9/16/04) |
|
Breakfast on a Boppy. (Thanks
Carol) Breast is
Best, but we're supplementing with formula to
address the hunger and biliruben issues until
Diane's milk comes in.
(9/16/04) |
|
Some informal phototherapy on the
bedroom floor (9/17/04) |
|
And the REAL phototherapy A nifty
little device that appears to be a halogen bulb run
through a blue filter which then outputs into a
fiberoptic strand that ends in a flat flexible
"paddle" that you lay the baby on and then swaddle.

Rigel William Cooper
(9/15/04)
He's got a name (whew!) and everybody's home (yea!). Heck, he's a
21st century child and even had his own e-mail address weeks before he was
born.
The dogs aren't quite sure what to make of this
little noisemaker but they're very interested to learn more about
it.
Homecoming (9/15/04) |

His first tummy time. Dad was
pretty relaxed too (9/15/04) |

Grandma Cathy & "Thor" at hospital
(he didn't have a name yet)
(9/14/04) |
|
At Long Last, Here He IS!
(9/14/04)
He's
one big baby! Born approximately 2.5 weeks early,
young "Thor" (name still TBD) was still pretty large:
|
Weight: 8 pounds, 4 oz (94th
percentile) |
|
Length: 21 inches (99th percentile) |
|
Head circumference: 13 inches (50th
percentile) |
|
Birth Date: September 13th, 2004 at
1637 |
Diane went from minor cramps of 0545 to
a ruptured amniotic sac at 0715. She then roared
off to 9 cm by 0915 when we got to the hospital.
But her pelvis is small, the baby was big, and the baby
was face up rather than face down. After an
epidural, augmentation with pitocin, and hours of labor,
the c-section was started at 1630 with our son being
born at 1637.
Mom and baby are doing well!
They'll come home from the hospital on Wednesday or
Thursday.
